How To Keep Your Washer Running Smoothly

One of the most important appliances in your home is your washer. Not only does it help keep your clothes clean, but it also helps preserve their quality. That’s why it’s so important to make sure your washer is running smoothly. By following a few simple tips, you can help ensure that your washer lasts for years to come. Here are a few tips for keeping your washing machine running smoothly:

  1. Always read through your clothes washer’s manual before using it for the first time. There is important information in the manual that will help you get the best performance from your machine while also helping it last longer. Following this step might prevent expensive repairs in the future! A good place to find a machine’s manual is on the manufacturer’s website.
  2. Use cold water for at least half of your clothes washer loads. Most modern machines have a special cycle just for using cold water. This will save you money as well as protect certain clothes that can be damaged by hot water, such as those that are dark-coloured or made from nylon. Only use the hottest setting when washing items such as towels and jeans, which need to be cleaned more thoroughly than lighter clothes like t-shirts and undergarments.
  3. Don’t overload your machine with clothing and never push down hard on it when loading or unloading clothes. Overloading the machine means that the drum won’t be able to rotate properly, and clothes aren’t getting clean enough because they’re not rubbing against each other, especially in the case of certain fabrics such as synthetics, which need more room to circulate.
  4. Always be sure there is a proper water level for what you’re washing. This amount varies from machine to machine, but if too much or not enough water gets into the drum, clothes will not get laundered properly or they may end up getting damaged by the shaft and agitator (if present) inside of the tub, because those parts can only rotate in one direction when under full power.
  5. Clean out your washer’s lint screen every time you do a load. Lint accumulates quickly and can catch fire if it constantly builds up inside your machine. If you have a washer with a lint filter, be sure to remove any lint that has built up there as well.
  6. Clean the entire drum of your washing machine every few months. This is an important step that most people forget about. If you use hot water when doing a load, then a lot of soap residue can build up on the tub’s interior, so it should be wiped down at least once every couple of months with a damp cloth. Be careful not to clean too much or scrub vigorously so as not to damage anything!
  7. If your machine ever starts making a rumbling or squeaking sound, don’t panic. There are a few things that could be causing this problem and it may not mean that something is wrong with your machine. Let’s say you’re washing a load of jeans in hot water and all of a sudden they make the drum vibrate intensely when they spin around during the cycle. This can happen if too much lint gets wrapped around the agitator during the wash, but it also will normally go away after several cycles without doing anything else. However, if you notice that your machine shakes whenever it fills up with water regardless of whether there are clothes inside or not, then it means that your machine is unbalanced. This can be fixed by adjusting the feet of your washing machine so that it tilts slightly in one direction or another, depending on which way needs to be raised up more.
  8. If you have a front-loading washer then remember to put a stabilizing clutch on. A stabilizing clutch connects the top and bottom halves of the tub together so that they don’t move independently of each other, which helps keep clothes from getting pulled into the opening where the agitator protrudes. This will help prevent mildew from building up inside as well as reduce vibration noise!
  9. Take care not to place any heavy objects on top of your washing machine. While most modern washing machines are generally sturdy with thick tubs that can withstand a certain amount of weight, the drum still needs to spin around in order for you to get your clothes clean! If too much weight is applied then your machine may not be able to move and turn anymore.
  10. Don’t ever let anyone sit or stand on top of your washer while it’s running because it won’t work very well if the feet become unbalanced. This is especially true for front-loading washers but since they’re sometimes heavy and cumbersome, there’s always a chance that something will happen while someone sits on them.
