4 Ways To Extend The Life Of Your Washer

4 Ways To Extend The Life Of Your Washer

We all want our appliances to last as long as possible. That’s why we read the manual and follow instructions when using our dishwasher or dryer for example. But when it comes to your washer, there are some things you might not know that could make your washing machine last longer. Here are 4 ways you can extend the life of your washer:

1) Know what type of soil level is right for your fabric load

Using a high-soil setting on lightly-soiled clothes will wear out your washer sooner — even if you’re using cold water. Using extra water is hard on your washer, because it must pump in more water to achieve the desired level of cleaning performance for the clothes. Overloading your washer with clothes also results in more wear and tear on your washer. A full load of laundry allows for better water saturation, cleaner clothes and lower utility costs!

2) Don’t use hot water for hand-washables

Hot water sets stains, so it may seem like a good idea to use hot water when washing clothes that cannot be washed in cold water. But using hot water for hand washables can reduce the longevity of your machine as well as shrink or damage some fabrics. Use a cold or warm setting instead and try adding some white vinegar during the rinse cycle to help freshen fabrics without sacrificing cleanliness.

3) Wash bulky items separately from delicate ones

They both have different needs, so you should wash them in separate loads. Bulky items will usually last longer when washed alone, because they can cause rubbing and abrasion on delicate items if the washer becomes unbalanced. Bulky items will also fill up more of the washer, which means less room for water — not to mention that bulky items often create extra work when it comes time to dry your clothes.

4) Clean your washer regularly

Start by checking your owner’s manual, because different manufacturers have specific directions on how to clean your particular model. But in general terms, most recommend using a mild detergent (or dish-washing solution) or white vinegar (about one cup per load) mixed with warm water (half and half), then run the clean cycle on your machine. At least once a month you’ll want to check your washer’s container (located inside the agitator) and make sure it is clean and free of debris.

Now you know how to properly clean and care for your washer so that it lasts longer. By following these simple tips, you can keep your washer running like new for years to come.
